The Perfect Winter Wine

I said on Insta-stories that I would start trying to share more cocktail recipes as my mom loves to make up fun little concoctions! One of my all time favorites that I look forward to every single winter is Mulled Wine. I have not really seen this served over here in the states or maybe it’s called something different but since my whole family is British (including me) we absolutely love to drink this on a cold winters day.

You know those days where you just can’t get warm and your bones are freezing? This drink is the perfect thing to snuggle up by the fire and get really toasty from the inside out. The wine is simmered in spices and served warm (fair warning the glasses are really hot). Not only does it taste amazing it will also leave your house smelling like winter too:)

Below is the full recipe with the ingredient my mom uses to make her Mulled Wine! It’s honestly is fairly cheap to make (bonus in my books) but you could substitute the wine for more expensive wine if you really wanted.

Ingredient:

  • 1 Bottle of dry Red Wine (My mom buys the big jug of Burgundy Carlo Rossi so she uses about 1/4 of it)
  • 1/4 Cup of Mulling Spice
  • 2 Cinnamon Sticks
  • Add Sugar to taste
  • 1 Orange, Sliced (Optional)
  • 1/4 Cup of Brandy (Optional)

Recipe:

Pour the bottle of wine into a sauce pan on the stove at a simmering temperature. Do NOT boil because it will boil all the alcohol out! (BIG NO NO!) If you have a large tea ball infuser place the Mulling Spice and break the Cinnamon sticks into the ball. Place the large tea ball in the wine on the stove. If you don’t have a tea ball infuser don’t panic, place the Mulling Spice and Cinnamon Sticks into the sauce pan with the wine.

Let the wine simmer on the stove for about 10-15 minutes. (Note: The longer it’s on the stove the less alcoholic the Mulled Wine will be) Stir in sugar while it simmers. Add in optional ingredients while simmering. Strain the wine if the spices and cinnamon were placed in the wine or pull the tea ball infuser out of the wine. Serve into a glass and finish with garnishes of your choice.

Cheers to the holidays!
